Glowing Bridal Skin in 4 Easy Steps - You May Already Know Them!

If you’re the type of bride who’s been planning your wedding since you were a little girl (and even if you aren’t) at some point you’ll find yourself surrounded by pictures of brides. Whether from wedding magazines or photography portfolios, you’ll see photos upon photos of beautiful brides with flawless hair, makeup…and skin!

Everyone wants great wedding photos, and when you’re looking back at yours, all you want to remember are the beautiful moments of one of the happiest days of your life – not the stubborn blemish that popped up the morning of your big day! We decided to make it our mission to discover what your skin needs most to stay clean and clear.

With so many mixed messages out there, we wanted to reach out to the pros for the scoop on how to prep your skin to ensure it’s picture-perfect for your big day.

We recently had the pleasure of being invited to collaborate on a beautiful photo shoot at The Great Hall in Toronto by Bridal Hair Collective. After receiving the images, we were blown away by work of our co-collaborators Mobile Makeovers, and knew they would have the skincare tips we were looking for.

Founder of Mobile Makeovers, Alexandra was on board to help us complete our task, and we’re excited to share our findings with you in 4 easy (we aren’t joking!) steps.

1. Get enough shut-eye

Alexandra recommends keeping it simple in preparation for your wedding. “First make sure you get plenty of sleep leading up to the big day”. They call it beauty sleep for a reason!

Sleep helps rebalance your body’s hydration, recovering moisture and processing excess water for removal. Poor water balance is caused by lack of sleep, which leads to puffy eyes and under-eye circles, as well as more visible wrinkles. Plus, when you’re sleep deprived, your body makes more cortisol - a stress hormone that can lead to inflammation in the body.

In the months leading up to your wedding, why not make a change to your evening routine? Indulge in some self-care practices like taking a bath or going for a run that will help calm down your mind so you can catch up on some Zzz’s.

2. Stay hydrated

Engagements and weddings are a cause for celebration, and celebrations are paired best with champagne! But before picking up your next glass of bubbly, stop and consider Alexandra’s second wedding skincare tip, which is as simple as her first: “water, water, water!”.

Our skin is our largest organ, and it relies on water to produce new cells, which help us achieve that pre-wedding glow. Also, if you aren’t getting enough H2O, the toxins in your body can accumulate and become trapped under your skin. Water helps your body flush out the toxins and is crucial to clearing up your skin.

Make a pact with your bridesmaids that every sip of celebratory champagne will be followed by a sip of water. And on your regular day-to-day, try carrying around a 1L water bottle with you or set an hourly alarm on your phone as a reminder to drink throughout the day!

3. Protect your skin

Sunscreen should always be a part of your skincare routine, and leading up to your wedding day it’s even more important. The last thing you want is “a pink peeling face or stripes on your body as you walk down the aisle” Alexandra remarks. She recommends Clarins, which offers several choices specifically for your face. Especially if you have oily skin, choose a moisturizer with at least SPF15. The sun literally zaps moisture out of your skin, which dries it out and makes any lines and wrinkles appear more prominent.

Take care that your sunscreen isn’t expired, as this means the formula has literally fallen apart and no longer works to protect your skin. Even worse – expired sunscreen can cause skin irritation.

4. Better safe than sorry

Alexandra’s final piece of advice is the easiest of all, it simply requires you to plan ahead when booking your appointments. She recommends a strict “better safe than sorry” policy when it comes to trying out any new treatments.

If you’re interested in lash extensions, microblading, or spray tans, she suggests test driving them at least a month before the wedding in case you aren’t happy with the results or they cause any side effects. This is actually a great practice in general when it comes to anything related to your appearance leading up to your wedding (or any big event!).
